The foundation of dental wellness is a daily oral care routine. That’s why, every February, industry professionals work diligently within their communities to provide educational resources promoting the importance of childhood dental care. It all begins with positive habits that not only set them up for proper oral care for life; it prepares children for their first orthodontist appointment.
And while it’s common for kids to have reservations about visiting the doctor’s office, we can assure both parents and their children that there’s no need to fear your friendly neighborhood orthodontist.
Here’s how to prepare children for their first orthodontist appointment.
Dr. Zach Truman has over twenty years of private practice under his belt. So it’s safe to say that he knows a thing or two about teeth. And along with the American Association of Orthodontists, Truman Orthodontics recommends that when kids reach age seven, it’s time to schedule their first screening.
Through our complimentary growth guidance program, Dr. Truman is able to monitor for and recognize potential issues like crowding, underbites, or crossbites. Early interceptive orthodontic treatment not only corrects these issues before they present more serious issues; it’s a huge time and money saver.
We’re not saying that dentists are scary. What we will say is that unlike dentists, orthodontists use noninvasive tools and methods to properly and gradually align your teeth and jaw over time. That means no drills, no shots, and no extraction forceps.
And although procedures like installing braces may lead to some after appointment discomfort, it’s nothing most over the counter medications or an ice pack can’t fix.
Cavities are a chronic childhood disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning.” Thankfully, they are also preventable.
To all the parents and guardians out there: oral health begins with you – even at birth. Keep the baby’s gums clean by gently wiping with a soft cloth. Once those baby teeth start to peek through, switch to a soft toothbrush. As kids reach toddler age, they often mimic the rec habits of the adults around them by age two. If your little one sees you brushing and flossing daily, odds are – they, eventually, will too.
Until your child is able to care for their teeth independently (usually around ages 6 or 7), brush their teeth when they wake up and before bedtime. Furthermore, further encourage good oral health by keeping sugary drinks to a minimum.
So, that first appointment is scheduled – now what? It’s important – for both parent and child – to know what to expect during a consultation. We at Truman Orthodontics encourage both parents and patients to ask questions. Both Dr. Truman and our treatment coordinators are happy to address concerns, fears, and curiosities. This not only prepares parents and guardians to weigh treatment options, for appointment and payment schedules; it empowers kids to take an active role in their dental health.
Also, there’s plenty of room in our consultation offices for the entire family. Further ease your child’s worries by assuring that you will be by their side throughout the appointment. And because childhood firsts are a big deal, it’s not a bad idea to celebrate a successful appointment.
As it turns out, we have a candy bar available for such an occasion.
A smile is among the most lasting investments in your child’s overall health. By adopting and encouraging daily oral care, you will not only help reduce your child’s dental anxieties; you will set them up for orthodontic success.
